Gulzar to be honoured by Sambalpur University

Sambalpur University in Orissa will honour noted Urdu poet, filmmaker and lyricist Gulzar by conferring upon him the Gangadhar Meher National award for poetry 2005.

The university instituted the award in 1992 in memory of celebrated poet Gangadhar Meher. It carries a citation, an ‘angabastram’ (a Sambalpuri shawl and a cash award of Rs.30,000).

According to a university release, the award would be given to the poet on the 40th foundation day celebrations of the university at Burla in the district of Sambalpur, 330 km from here.

Well-known poets Ali Sardar Zafri (Urdu), Binda Karandikar and Jayanta Mohapatra (English), Ramakanta Rath (Oriya) and Sachidanandan (Malayalam) are some of the earlier recipients of the award.
