Bengali movies have no buyers
Organisers of the 12th Kolkata Film Festival have reportedly failed to attract distributors and buyers for Bengali films from Bollywood or down South.
Despite its good opening at the Film Mart in Nandan, the CII organised event has failed to charm both distributors and buyers. Bengali films are still looking for buyers and distributors in Bollywood and down South, although they have been appreciated by international buyers.
At least 22 lakh viewers from 53 countries are attending the film festival.
Festival director Nilanjan Chakravorty, however, is still optimistic. According to him, the film mart is a great platform for promoting both the arts and the business of film making.
“These festivals have so many so many dimensions. We are living in a modern age, in a highly industrially advanced stage. We also have to think about the market. So, a film market has been added to the festival, and we are trying to use it to the optimum to make a bridge between art and the market,” said Chakavorty.
About 300 films will be screened during the festival which continues till November 17, including classics by 90 great directors. Chilean director Miguel Littin, whose ‘Land of the Fire’ is being screened here, is expected to attend the festival.
The CII, is looking at the event as a medium to create a bridge between the audience, the producers and distributors, so that marketing strategy helps in the sale of the films as well.
“The film market is to help marketing the films. The people who are here are basically film distributors, some producers and media houses. From our company, CII, we are sponsoring this concept for the last four years. The whole idea of this is interface between producers and audience present in the festival,” said Sanjay Budhia, Chairman, CII National Committee.
Bergman’s ‘Summer Interludes’ and John Ford’s ‘Stagecoach’ are attracting a lot of attention at the festival. Films like ‘Metropolis’ (Germany), ‘Metamorphosis’(Russia), ‘October’ (Russia) and ‘The Passion of Joan of Arc’(France) also top the viewing list of most cine-goers. The Indian entries include ‘Uttarayan’, ‘Prithvi’, ‘Navarasa’, ‘Hasina’, ‘Joymoti’ and ‘Teen Yari Katha’.
