Shabana says people must have zero tolerance for female foeticide
Expressing concern over increasing number of female foeticide cases in Punjab, eminent actress Shabana Azmi today suggested serious consideration be given to booking doctors indulging in pre-natal sex test under Section 302 of Indian Penal Code (amount to murder).
She said people of the state should have zero tolerance approach towards the female foeticide to save girl child.
“It is very serious that Punjab has witnessed a steep fall in the sex ratio and now the society should gear up to develop the approach of zero tolerance against female foeticide to save the girl child”, Azmi, co-chairperson of state advisory committee on female foeticide said while addressing a meeting of social organisations here.
She said a serious debate should be mooted for making a law to book doctors indulging in female foeticide under section 302 of IPC as the act also amounts to murder.
Doctors have significant role to reduce female foeticide and they should also keep in my that any such operation amounted to murder, Azmi said adding volunteer social organizations should also come forward to create awareness in the society against the menace of female foeticide.
“People who think that we must empower the women through education, equal social status and career opportunities to girl child should create awareness in the society”, she added.
