Lakme Fashion Week open with Narendra Kumar’s designs
Elaborate batiks, detailed embroidery and flapped patch pockets by fashion designer Narendra Kumar wowed audiences as the men’s line for the Spring/Summer Collection 2007 of the Lakme Fashion week kicked off here Tuesday.
Bollywood actor John Abraham shashayed down the ramp to showcase some items at the function being held at the National Centre for Performing Arts, Mumbai.
Drawing inspiration from the abstract art of Jackson Pollack and the works of George Braque of the cubist movement, Kumar gave a free run to his imagination for the collection called aptly “The Artist Inside”.
It featured highly-detailed batik shirts, linen trousers, shirts with tiny floral prints embellished with embroidery and plentiful of flapped patch pockets.
The men’s line jackets had some stylish detailing like a single printed label, triangular contrast bands and puffed pockets.
There were lots of zippers, the legs tapered down to almost skin tight silhouettes and the Capri and cycle shorts had pleating, large flap puffed patched pockets, or contrast piped slits.
The colour palette ranged from natural to apple green olive, rust, and gold.
The body-fitting silhouette with an occasional burst of volume gave a sportier look than formal. The two-piece suits were in dual colours worn at times sans footwear.
Kumar’s collection did not shy away from portraying some tongue-in-cheek humour, but the mainstay remained detailing.
The finale was a white linen suit with hand painted strokes worn by John Abraham.
Kumar’s men’s wear gave a new ultra modern millennium look to clothes, striking the right balance to attract both western buyers and Indian men.
