Bollywood Filmakers turn to the gods to woo audience
It’s the return of the gods in Bollywood. With films like “Jai Santoshi Maa”, “Krishna” and “Hanuman”, filmmakers are increasingly turning to mythological and religious subjects to attract audiences. “Indians today are materially very satisfied, but there is no peace of mind. It is at such times that there is a turning back to faith and films with motifs of faith, worship and divine intervention are what are going to work,” says Arun Nalawde, a Marathi actor making his directorial debut with “Siddhivinayak Mahima”, a story on Ganesha worship to be filmed in the Siddhivinayak temple here. Shailendra Singh of Percept Picture Company, who produced the remake of “Jai Santoshi Maa”, echoes the sentiment. “We conducted research on this subject and found that if backed by a good script and strong marketing, such films will do well in India. Audiences are looking to go back to the thing that matters most, which is peace of mind,” he said. However, except for “Hanuman”, “Krishna” and “Jai Santoshi Maa” flopped miserably at the box office. Analyst Komal Nahta believes it is not just the subject but also the way, in which it is treated that makes a difference. “I believe everything will work, but it has to be treated well. The original ”Jai Santoshi Maa” had a wonderful script, great music and great drama. This one had nothing and that is why it failed. ”Hanuman” worked because it was such a fun film,” he explains.
