Sharmila seeks transparency in B’cast regulator appointments

Censor Board chief Sharmila Tagore today emphasised the need for “transparency” in forming the proposed broadcast regulator and said efforts should be made to remove overlaps in the functioning of the two bodies.

“There has to be some sort of uniformity at some level… and identify where there are some overlaps,” Tagore, chairperson of Central Board for Film Certification (CBFC), said at a meeting organised by industry chamber Assocham to discuss the draft ‘Broadcasting Services Regulation Bill - 2006′.

Government has proposed formation of a Broadcast Regulatory Authority of India (BRAI) as part of the proposed bill which it has thrown open for suggestions and comments.

Listing her apprehensions over the provisions in the Bill, Tagore said a transparent system should be put in place for selecting its members. “The process has to be transparent for deciding the composition of BRAI… We need to look at that carefully,” she said.

Information and Broadcasting Secretary S K Arora assured the industry gathering that the Government was open to suggestions and comments on the proposed measure.

“Government is open to suggestions and incorporate fresh ideas and issues we may have omitted,” he said.

As per the provisions in the draft bill, the chairperson and six whole-time members of the BRAI would be appointed by the Centre from among professionals from the field of TV, radio, journalism, finance, telecom, IT, consumer affairs, judiciary and public administration, among others.
