Salman files reply in Kankani poaching case
A reply filed today on behalf of Bollywood actor Salman Khan in a local court hearing a poaching case against the star opposed the prosecution’s plea to produce nine more witnesses. The prosecution moved the application to bring in more witnesses, including two eyewitnesses Poonam Chand and Mangilal as also four doctors of Animal Husbandry Department, contending that they could reveal “decisive facts” in the matter and support the prosecution in the case related to the alleged poaching of endangered animals at Kankani. Salman’s counsel H M Saraswat filed a reply before the Judicial Magistrate of Jodhpur, saying the case had dragged on for about eight years and only one witness — Additional Superintendent of Police Ashok Patni — was to be examined. At this stage, the prosecution could not be permitted to summon more witnesses as it would delay the verdict. The court will now hear the matter on September 18. It also fixed September 18 as the next date for hearing another case of alleged illegal possession of weapons by Salman. In this case, the court had issued a show-cause notice to the actor for allegedly misleading the court and giving “false statements” on oath. Prosecution moved an application contending that Salman has “misled” the court by stating that his weapons licence was misplaced. However, Mumbai Police have stated in the Jodhpur court that his licence was with them. A court here earlier sentenced Salman to two separate jail terms in two poaching cases but he has appealed the verdicts.
