Pune Intl Film Festival from Jan 11; to have section on sports

Next year’s Pune International Film Festival will be held from January 11 and it would have a special section on sports movies, film director Dr Jabbar Patel said here today.

Speaking at the inaugural ceremony of the 18th Pune Fesitval here, Dr Patel, who is chairman of the committee that has been organising the Pune International Film Festival for the past couple of years, said that it was the only film festival in the country that had a world competition.

The best international film will get a prize of 20,000 US Dollars, he said adding the festival also had awards for Marathi films.

The eight-day-long film festival will be having a special section for films based on sports themes. They could either be features films or documentaries, Patel said.

Awards will be given to films made by students in best film, direction and screenplay categories.

The winners would get US Dollars ranging from 2000 to 1000 as prize money, Patel said and informed that the University of Pune would be judging winners from the entries of films made in a span of 72 hours during the period of film festival.

Patel added that there will be a music section and an international award for best creative music and sound in the memory of late Hindi film composer Sachin Dev Burman in his birth centenary year.
