A local court today directed Mumbai Police Commissioner to comply with its order to serve notices on producer-director Ekta Kapoor and TV actress Meera Singhania for allegedly tarnishing the image of women lawyers in a television soap.

In a writ petition in April General Secretary of Young Lawyers’ Association Ratan Agarwal accused Kapoor of defaming advocates in her serial “Kyonki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi” that is telecast on Star Plus channel. Singhania is cast as a lawyer in the serial.

The court of special Chief Judicial Magistrate had in May issued notices asking for relevant tapes and to the Kapoor, the serial’s producer, her production House Balaji Telefilms, the private channel and the actress.

Observing that the notices had not been served yet, special chief judicial magistrate Pankaj Upadhyai issued the directive to the Mumbai police commissioner and fixed October 18 as the next date of hearing in the case.
