Farmers enact scene from ‘Sholay’ to get mustard payment
Enacting a scene from Bollywood all-time hit ‘Sholay’, seven farmers climbed onto an 80 feet water tank in Sriganganagar district demanding quick payment for procurement of mustard crop by Rajasthan government and got down only this morning after getting an assurance from the authorities.
Farmers affiliated to the Bhartiya Kisan Sangh have been on agitation for the last fortnight and hold sit-in outside the Sub-Divisional Magistrate office on a charter of demands including the payment against the mustard procurement by the state agencies after last rabi season, Additional Superintendent of Police (Sriganganagar) Rajendra Sharma said.
About Rs 60-70 crores worth payment was due on the part of the state and the central governments as per their demands, and no positive assurance was extended by the either governments, the SP said.
Annoyed with the administration’s alleged lacklustre respones, the farmers reached the top of the tank last night raising their demands, he said adding they also threatened to jumped to death if the demands were not met forthwith.
Bikaner’s MP Dharmendra was contacted on telephone by the farmers’ leaders after which Sharma and other senior police officials convinced them for early payment of their crop.
The farmers got down only in the wee hours today.
Authorities, however, denied that Dharmendra came to Sriganganagar yesterday after the incident as reported by some TV channels.
They said the MP came to the town about 6-7 months ago and sanctioned a sum of Rs 15 lakh for the bus stand construction and that his clippings are old one.
