Sharmila Tagore humbled by Ugandan AIDS orphan
Sharmila Tagore who is the goodwill ambassador for the United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF), was deeply touched after meeting a 12-year-old Ugandan AIDS orphan, who was bringing up her five siblings alone.
Tagore, while delivering a speech at the 16th International AIDS conference in Toronto yesterday said that she was stunned after meeting Alice, who had been fending for her brothers and sisters since the tender age of eight.
“I was not prepared for what I saw. We went to this little tiny place, in the middle of nowhere.
There was no electricity, there was no water, and they were totally unprotected. It was such a humbling experience,” Contactmusic quoted her, as saying.
She also called on governments to listen to young people, and give them metaphorical “wings” to escape the horror of the AIDS pandemic. — ANI
