Music exponents pay rich tributes to Bismillah Khan

Music exponents from across the country today paid rich tributes to shehnai maestro Bismillah Khan who died in Varanasi in the wee hours of the day.

Sarod maestro Amjad Ali Khan termed the shehnai maestro’s demise as a “personal loss” but said his music “will always be around us.” “His shehnai has become a symbol of our country … His music had a beauty of its own … His demise is a personal loss to me,” he said.

Recalling the days when she worked with Bismillah Khan for the film ‘Goonj Uthi Shehani’, singer Lata Mangeshkar said “he was like a father figure to me and his demise is a great loss to the world of Indian music.” Lauding Khan as the “greatest patriot”, renowned classical singer Pandit Jasraj said “he held enthralled the audiences across the globe with magical performances on the shehnai.” Expressing grief over Khan’s demise, nonagenarian Hindustani vocalist Gangubai Hangal said she would cherish the memories of performing alongside the maestro.

“He used to attend my musical functions in Hubli and would give me a hug after a memorable performance,” the 94-year-old vocalist said.

Tabla maestro Ustad Zakir Hussain said there was magic in the music of Bismillah and played a key role in propogation of the glorious shehnai world over.  — PTI
