A leading hospital in Mumbai today offered to treat veteran Shehnai maestro Ustad Bismillah Khan, who is undergoing treatment in Varanasi.

“We have offered treatment to Bismillah Khan and we have informed this to his family as the music maestro needs quality and superspeciality tertiary care as he has problem in the heart valve and also developed pneumonia,” Bombay Hospital spokesperson Dr Ashishkumar Tiwari told PTI.

“We have informed the family and our team of doctors are kept ready to bring the legendary shehnai artist from Varanasi the moment the family agrees,” he said.

Bombay Hospital will bear all the expenses for the treatment of the 91-year-old Bharat Ratna awardee, he said.

However, Soma Ghosh, Bismillah’s adpoted daughter who resides in suburban Malad, said that the family was touched by the hospital’s service offer for ‘Baba’ (as Khan was affectionately called).

“But my family back in Varanasi feels that since Baba is not suffering from any disease and became weak only of old age the need to bring him here does not arise,” she said.

The legendary musician is currently undergoing treatment in Varanasi’s Heritage Hospital and doctors attending on him said that his health has improved and his vital parameters are functioning normally.

They said he will remain under observation in the intensive care unit of the hospital for the next two or three days.

Khan was rushed to the hospital yesterday on the advice of his personal physician Nadeem Jafri after his condition appeared to deteriorate.
