Shilpa ShettyFacing charges of obscenity, Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty has written to Chief Justice of India Y.K. Sabharwal after receiving support from the National Commission for Women (NCW).Shilpa said in her letter that “such cases” were merely to gain cheap publicity and cause damage to the reputation of artistes. They also end up wasting the court’s precious time, she said.

The actress sought a guiding precedent in “maligning cases” by lawyers against film artistes.

Shilpa also thanked the NCW and its chairperson Girija Vyas for her support at the time of crisis.

An advocate from Madurai in Tamil Nadu had filed a ‘public interest litigation’ (PIL) against Shilpa and Reema Sen for posing for an allegedly obscene photograph in Tamil magazine “Tamil Murasu”, saying it “polluted the minds of young people”.

However, early this month the Madras High Court put a stay on the non-bailable arrest warrant issued against the actresses by a magistrate court in Madurai.

The picture is a still from Shilpa’s Kannada film “Auto Shankar”, which has been approved by the censor board. However, Shilpa’s publicist Dale Bhagwagar said that she had neither posed for the picture nor given permission to publish it.
