So impressed is actor Ajay Devgan with Vishal Bhardwaj ’s movie that he prefers it to Shakespeare’s Othello.

In Devgan’s words, his excitement about the project hasn’t abated a bit ever since he first heard the script of Omkara.

The film is based on Shakespeare’s Othello and has Devgan in the title role.

“When I heard the script, I was very excited to do it. Usually what happens is when you see the final draft, you think, ‘ok, it’s nice’ but not as you thought it would be…This is one film I am as excited about as I was on the first day,” a report quotes Devgan as saying.

Bhardwaj has a knack for giving an underworld twist to Shakespeare’s works. He first adapted the story of MacBeth into Mumbai mafia world in Maqbool . And now he transforms Othello into the tale of outlaws in Uttar Pradesh.

Devgan plays Omi (similar to Othello), Saif Ali Khan plays Langda Tyagi (ala Iago), Vivek Oberoi plays Kesu (ala Cassius) and Kareena Kapoor plays Dolly (ala Desdemona).

Devgan says the most striking thing about the movie is the way Bhardwaj has adapted the story into Indian milieu.

“The way Vishal Bhardwaj has adapted it I would say he has done a great job. For me, it is better than the original. Vishal is a brilliant writer and director,” Devgan is quoted.

‘Omkara’ is set to hit the theatres by July end.
