After the availability of Boot Camp, almost every one has been trying to install Windows XP on their Intel-based iMacs, Mac minis and MacBook Pros — even we're going to try it on our new iMac this weekend! Apparently some people who've installed Windows XP on their MacBook Pros have found out that the ATI Radeon X1600 in the laptops have been underclocked from 470MHz core and memory to 310MHz core and 278MHz memory. That's around 34% less core clock speed and 41% less memory clock speed!

Apple has underclocked the GPU in the MacBook Pro to conserve battery life of the laptop. The MacBook Pro lasts for around 3 hours, out of which 30 minutes can be taken out if the X1600 runs at its full specifications — which is around 17% of the battery life of the notebook! Now you can understand why Apple wanted to do this. But enthusiasts are having fun with the uncapped GPUs on their MacBook Pros!
