We’ve had LCD monitors with cameras integrated on top of the monitor frame, but Apple's new innovation turns the LCD monitor itself into a camera!

The idea behind it is that they've inserted thousands of microscopic image sensors inside the liquid crystal display cells on the screen. Each of those sensors is capable of capturing their own image and stitching them together through the bundled software. So you can basically use the monitor screen as a display unit as well as a camera at the same time.

Compared to a standard webcam, a great advantage from this technology is that the user will always appear looking straight at the camera instead of away, at the monitor.

This technology can be easily carried forth to PDAs and Mobile phones in due time, but as for now its patent lies with Apple Computers.
