Mohammad Rafi

You may say that he is one of the legends of India when it comes to Bollywood songs. There is not a single type of song that Mohammad Sahab has not sung during his singing career. This man with the golden voice was born on the 24th of December, 1924 in the city of Amritsar, Punjab. He gained immense popularity for his versatility and is remembered for his romantic songs, sad songs, ghazals, and funny songs. When he was young, Rafi used to imitate the chants of various fakirs near his house. He learnt music from Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan, Firoze Nizami, and Ustad Abdul Wahid Khan. He was barely 13 years when he started giving public performances and he made his debut as a singer in a Punjabi movie Gul Baloch along with Zeenat Begum. He started singing for Bollywood in the year 1945 with the movie Gaon Ki Gori and since then there was no looking back for him.

Lata Mageshkar

Referred to as the Nightingale of Indian cinema, Lata Mangeshkar is one of the most recognized and respected female singers of Bollywood. With a career spanning more than 7 decades, Lata ji has sung in a variety of songs for numerous actresses. She was born on the 28th of September, 1929 in Madhya Pradesh in a Marathi family. She was just 5 years old when she started appearing in her father’s plays as an actress. She was just 13 years old when she had to start working in order to support her family after the demise of her father due to heart attack. Her first song Naachu Yaa Gade was for a Marathi movie named Kiti Hasaal.

In the year 1945, Lata ji shifted to Mumbai where she started taking singing classes from Ustad Amanat Ali Khan in Hindustani Classical music. Life was not that easy for her during the first few years. She had to struggle a lot in order to make a mark in Bollywood. She scored her first hit song in the year 1949. It was from the year 1950 that she became a recognized singer in Bollywood and started working with numerous music directors. There was no looking back for her as she kept on winning one award after the other. Soon she got awarded with Bharat Ratna  and Padma Vibhushan.

Kishore Kumar

He was not just a versatile singer but also an actor, lyricist, producer, composer, and director. He has sung songs of different genres with equal ease and charm. Born on the 13th of October, Kishore was a Bengali. His original name was Abhas Kumar Ganguly and he showed his interest in music from a very tender age. Kishore Kumar was the youngest of 3 brothers, the eldest being Ashok Kumar, who was a popular actor in Bollywood. Ashok wanted Kishore to become an actor as well.

However, life took a turn for the young Kishore when Burman saw him mimicking one of the songs of the great K.L. Saigal. He got a chance to sing for the first time and proved himself to Burman. During the years between 1970s and 1980s Kishore was found to sing for several actors, such as Anil Kapoor, Dev Anand, Rajesh Khanna, and Amitabh Bachchan. Kishore not just sang in Hindi but also in Bengali, Marathi, Kannada, Gujarati, Urdu, and Oriya.

Asha Bhonsle

The younger sister of Lata Mangeshkar, she is another singing sensation of Bollywood. With a career span of over 6 decades, Asha has sung songs in several languages. Her quality of singing and her versatile voice soon made her one of the highly popular singers of the nation. Asha has sung in thousands of Bollywood movies and for several actresses. She has also sung with some of the biggest names in the Bollywood music world such as Kishore Kumar and Mohammad Rafi. Asha was born on the 8th of September, 1933. Daughter of Deenanath Mangeshkar, a popular classical musician and theater actor, Asha started her singing career in the year 1943 with a Marathi movie. She made her Hindi movie debut with Chunariya. Asha had to face tremendous struggles during the early part of her career. However, the song Nanhe Munne Bachhe made her an overnight star in the world of Bollywood music.

Sonu Nigam

Thanks to his frequently changing style statements and countless versatility, Sonu is one of the teen icons of modern India. He was born on the 30th of July, 1973 in the city of Faridabad, Haryana. After completing his school education, Sonu shifted to Mumbai in order to pursue his singing career. He often used to accompany his father, Agam Kumar, to his various shows. Often considered to have an exact voice quality of Mohammad Rafi, Sonu has sung in several languages such as Hindi, Gujarati, Bengali, Telugu, Tamil, and Marathi. Kavita Krishnamurthy

She happens to be one of the leading playback singers of Bollywood between the 1980s and 1990s. Born on the 25th of January, 1958, Kavita is trained in classical music. She has more than 15000 songs to her credit in almost 16 different languages. Kavita has worked with numerous reputed and experienced music directors of her time such as OP nayyar, Laxmikant-Pyarelal, Hemant Kumar, RD Burman, and Anu Malik to name a few. Her aunt, Protima Bhattacharya was the reason behind her classical music training. She insisted that Kavita start her proper training in classical music. She was barely 8 years old when Kavita won won a gold medal in training in a Hindustani classical music competition. She was studying at St. Xxavier’s College when she got the golden opportunity to sing with Lata Mangeshkar in a Bengali movie. Since then Kavita never looked back. She went on to win several awards during her singing career and was also honored with the Padma Shri Award.

Udit Narayan

The next in the list of best Bollywood singers of all time is Udit Narayan. With his ever smiling face and a unique expressive singing style, this exceptional singer won hearts pretty early. Udit was born on the 1st of December, 1955 in the city of Saptari, Nepal. During the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s the people of India got a wide array of songs sung by the melodious singer. He happens to be the only singer from Bollywood who has successfully won the hearts of millions over the years with his exceptional voice texture.

It was during the year 1980 that Udit caught the attention of the music director Rajesh Roshan he also started his Bollywood career that same year. His songs for the movies Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander, and many more made him a new sensation all across the country. He won his first Filmfare Award for the song Mehendi Lagake Rakhna from the movie Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge in the year 1995. This was almost 7 years after he got his first major breakthrough in the movie Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak. Udit Narayan has recorded close to 25000 songs in Bollywood in over 36 different languages.
