If you wish to find out a few names of people who ventured into the film industry after being professional models, then one of the most common names would be of Aishwarya Rai. Born on the 1st of November, 1973, she is also known as Aishwarya Rai Bachchan after her wedding. Apart from being a very successful and popular actress in Bollywood, Aishwarya was also a model and the winner of the Miss World 1994 pageant. With dedication and hard work, she established herself as one of the most influential and popular celebrities of the country. During her acting career, Aishwarya has won several awards and recently she also received the highly prestigious Padma Shri Award by the Government of India. Ever since her wedding with Abhishek Bachchan, Rai has also proved that she is also a good wife and a mother apart from being a highly talented actress.

Aishwarya Rai Early Life

Aishwarya was born in a Tuluva Bunt family in the city of Mangaluru, Karnataka. Krishnaraj, her father, was an Indian Army biologist. However, he has passed away on the 18th of March, 2017. Rai’s mother, Brinda, was a housewife. Rai also has an elder brother, named Aditya Rai, who works with the merchant navy as an engineer. The entire family shifted their base to Mumbai, where Aishwarya completed her school education from the Arya Vidya Mandir High School. She had also done her intermediate schooling at the Jai Hind College for almost a year. Later she joined the DG Ruparel College, located in Matunga, where she got 90% in her HSC exams.

When Rai was in her teens, she trained in classical dance, as well as, music for almost 5 years. Amongst the various subjects, her favorite was zoology. This prompted her to pursue a career in medicine. Later she changed her mind and decided to become an architect. In order to fulfil her plans, she joined Rachana Sansad Academy of Architecture. However, fate had other plans for her. Rai soon gave up education and finally decided to become a model.

In the world of modelling and glamor, Rai gained popularity in leaps and bounds. She won an international supermodel contest that was organized by Ford in the year 1991. She was also eventually featured in the American edition of Vogue. Aishwarya gained great popularity and recognition after she featured in a Pepsi television commercial with Aamir Khan and Mahima Chowdhry in the year 1993. It was in the year 1994 in the Miss India pageant that she won the first runners up award after Sushmita Sen. Rai was crowned as Miss India World. She had also won five other sub-titles in the same pageant, Miss Catwalk, Miss Photogenic, Miss Miraculous, Miss Popular, and Miss Perfect Ten. With Sushmita representing India at the Miss Universe pageant, Aishwarya represented India at the Miss World pageant. The contest was held in Sun City, South Africa. Rai won the crown and also the Miss Photogenic and Miss World Continental Queen of Beauty – Asia and Oceania awards.

Aishwarya Rai: Life as an Actress

Aishwarya Rai made her acting debut in the year 1997 in the Tamil movie Iruvar, directed by Mani Ratnam. The movie was all about a semi-biographical political drama that also featured other popular actors of South India such as Prakash Raj, Mohanlal, and Revathi. The movie went on become a critical success and it also won the Best Film award at the Belgrade International Film Festival. Aishwarya had to play twin roles of Pushpavalli and Kalpana. She also made her Bollywood debut the same year by working with Bobby Deol in the movie Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya. Both the Tamil and Hindi movies did not fare well commercially. Movie critics were also doubtful about her acting abilities. Nonetheless, Rai did win the Screen Award for Best Female Debut for Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya.

In the year 1998, Rai appeared in another Tamil movie named Jeans, which was a big-budget project. It also featured Nassar and Prashanth and the movie was directed by S. Shankar. Rai played the role of Madhumita, who was a young woman accompanying her ailing grandmother to the United States of America in order to get proper medical help. Jeans was a commercial success and she finally succeeded in earning praise for her dancing and acting skills. This movie was also submitted as the official entry to the Academy Awards by India. Duringthe following year, Rai worked in Aa Ab Laut Chalen that was directed by Rishi Kapoor. The movie was a failure and did not do well at the box office. Rise to Popularity for Aishwarya Rai

Aishwarya’s luck started to change for the better in the year 1999. Her first movie of the year, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, proved to be the turning point for her in her acting career. The movie was basically an adaptation of the Bengali novel Na Hanyate written by Maitreyi Devi. The movie was directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali and featured Salman Khan and Ajay Devgan alongside Rai. She played the role of Nandini, a Gujarati girl who is forced to marry the character played by Ajay despite falling in love with the character played by Salman. Sanjay met Aishwarya at the screening of a movie and immediately decided to cast her in his movie after getting impressed by her eyes. Film critics praised her acting skills in the movie and some even went on to say that her acting overshadowed her co-stars in the movie. Rai won the Filmfare Best Actress award for her role in the movie.

Her forthcoming movie, Taal, was directed by Subhash Ghai and featured Akshay Khanna, Anil Kapoor, Alok Nath, and Amrish Puri. Rai played the role of Mansi, who was an aspiring singer. The film enjoyed a moderate domestic success and critics praised her dancing and acting prowess in the movie. Her role in the movie also fetched her the second Best Actress nomination the same year at the Filmfare Awards ceremony. The year 2000 saw Rai working in a Tamil movie, Kandukondain Kandukondain, which was basically an adaptation of the popular Jane Austen novel Sense and Sensibility.

The film was directed by Rajiv Menon and it also featured Mammootty, Tabu, and Ajith Kumar. Aishwarya had to play the role of Meenakshi, which was based on the character of Marianne Dashwood. The movie was both a critical and commercial success. She also received several positive comments from movie critics. That same year Rai worked in several other movies such as Josh with Chandrachur Singh and Shah Rukh Khan, Hamara Dil Aapke Paas Hai with Anil Kapoor and Sonali Bendre, Dhai Akshar Prem Ke, and Mohabbatein. For the movie Mohabbatein, Rai plays the role of Megha Shankar, daughter of a school principal played by Amitabh Bachchan. Megha commits suicide in the movie after her father rejects her romance with the character played by Shah Rukh Khan.

In the year 2002, Rai work in a David Dhawan movie, Hum Kisise Kum Nahin, which was a comedy movie. After this movie she got a chance to work in Devdas, which was made by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. The movie was an adaptation of the extremely popular novel written by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay by the same name. Aishwarya played the role of Paro in the movie, who was the love interest of Devdas, played by Shah Rukh Khan. The movie was also screened at the 2002 Cannes Film Festival and also got featured in the list of 10 Best Films of the Millennium by Time.

The movie proved to be a major success internationally and it earned total of US$ 12 million. Devdas was also chosen as India’s entry into the Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film. It also went on to receive a nomination at the BAFTA Awards also in the Best Foreign Language Film category. Devdas won 10 Filmfare Awards in India, which also included the Best Actress Award for Rai for the second time in her acting career.

Aishwarya Rai went on to work in many other movies, some of which did extremely well both commercially and critically, and some simply vanished without creating more than a ripple at the box office. Apart from working in movies, Aishwarya has also endorsed a lot of brands on television. She made her first ever TV commercial for Camlin exam pencils. She was in her 9th grade at that time. However, she became popular after she appeared in the Pepsi advertisement with Aamir Khan. Rai happens to be the only actress who has endorsed both Coca Cola and Pepsi. She is also one of the top brand ambassadors in India, as well as, one of the highest paid actresses in Bollywood. Social Work

Along with Rani Mukerji, Aamir Khan, Twinkle Khanna, and Akshay Khanna, Rai also participated in a world tour known as Magnificent Five in the year 1999.  That same year saw Rai getting appointed as Longines Ambassador of Elegance. She also became the first Indian actress to become a jury member at the Cannes Film Festival in the year 2003. It was also in the same year that she became a global brand ambassador of L’Oreal, along with Eva Longoria, Penelope Cruz, and Andie MacDowell. In the year 2005, Rai became a brand ambassador for Pulse Polio, which is basically a campaign carried out by the Government of India in the year 1994 to get rid of polio completely from the nation.

She also laid the foundation of a special school for the underprivileged girls along with other members of the Bachchan family in the year 2008. This foundation was laid in Daulatpur village, located in Uttar Pradesh. The construction of the school is being funded by the Bachchan family and the school will be named after Aishwarya Rai. This is not the end. Rai has also appeared with other members of the Bollywood industry in the closing ceremony of the 2006 Commonwealth Games, which was in Melbourne.

Personal Life of Aishwarya Rai

In the year 1999, Aishwarya started dating Salman Khan. Their pictures were often published on media and there were reports about their relationship every now and then. However, they finally separated in the year 2002. Rai said the common causes for the separation was physical, emotional, and verbal abuses by Khan. Abhishek Bachchan finally fell in love with her while working together for the movie Dhoom 2. Their engagement was announced on the 14th of January, 2007. They finally got married on the 20th April, 2007. The wedding took place in a rather private ceremony at Prateeksha in Juhu, Mumbai, which is the Bachchan residence. Rai gave birth to her daughter Aaradhya on the 16th November, 2011. Apart from being a successful actress, she also proved that she is a very good mother and wife.
