Star kids following the footsteps of their parents is nothing new in Bollywood. One of the biggest examples of this is Abhishek Bachchan. He is a popular movie actor in Bollywood and has done several movies till date in his acting career. His parents Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan are both highly reputed actors in the country of their times. Although, Amitabh Bachchan is still working in movies and promoting brands, his wife Jaya Bachchan has retired from full scale movies. Abhishek started his career as an actor from the film Refugee, in which he worked alongside Kareena Kapoor, who also debuted in the same movie. He went on to work in several other movies in his career, some of which were both critically and commercially popular, whereas, some that vanished without making much noise in the box office.
Abhishek Bachchan Early Life
Abhishek was born on the 5th of February, 1976 in the city of Mumbai. Although his parents, Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan are highly noted and popular actors of the Hindi movie industry, his grandfather, Harivansh Rai Bachchan, was nothing less. He was a highly noted poet of the Nayi Kavita Literary Movement and a professor at the Allahabad University in Uttar Pradesh. Abhishek Bachchan’s grandmother, Teji Bachchan, was a social activist. The original surname of the family is Srivastava. However, Bachchan was Harivansh Rai’s pen name, which Amitabh adopted as his surname when he entered Indian cinema during his time.
Abhishek had to attend several schools in order to complete his school education. He started off with Jamnabai Narsee School and then started studying at the Bombay Scottish School, both of which are in the city of Mumbai. He finally completed his school education from Modern School in Vasant Vihar, New Delhi. Abhishek completed his college education from Aiglon College in Switzerland. He also attended Boston University after Switzerland. However, he did not receive any degree from Boston and finally entered Bollywood.
Abhishek Bachchan Movie Career
During his entire acting career, Abhishek has worked in almost 50 movies till date. It was during the year of 2000 that he debuted in the movie Refugee. It was basically a war drama and was made by J.P. Dutta. Refugee performed moderately at the Box Office and both the lead actors received positive reviews for their acting skills. After Refugee, Abhishek worked in a series of movies that were received poorly by the Indian audiences. He received his first nomination in the Best Supporting Actor category in the Filmfare Awards ceremony for his performance in the movie Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon made by Sooraj R. Barjatya. However, Abhishek did manage to bag the award the following year for his performance in the movie Yuva made by Mani Ratnam.
It was in the movie Dhoom that Abhishek managed to establish himself as a good actor in Bollywood. He played the role of a no-nonsense Mumbai police officer in the movie. Dhoom also featured John Abraham, Uday Chopra, Rimi Sen, and Esha Deol. During the same year 2004, he worked in 2 more movies, Naach and Phir Milenge.
The year 2005 saw Abhishek’s first release in the form of a crime comedy movie named as Bunty Aur Babli. He was paired opposite Rani Mukerji and his father Amitabh Bachchan was also in the movie working as a cop. Both Abhishek and Rani act as con artists who perform several heists before they fall in love with each other. Bunty Aur Babli was also the second highest grossing movie of the year, which also earned Abhishek a nomination for the Filmfare Award in the Best Actor category. This movie was the first in which both father and son worked for the first time together.
He went on to work in Sarkar made by Ram Gopal Varma. The movie was a political drama and performed moderately at the Box Office. Abhishek played the role of a morally upright son of a troubled and aging politician that was played by his father Amitabh. His performance in the movie earned his several rave reviews from movie critics. Sarkar also helped Abhishek earn his second Filmfare Award in the Best Supporting Actor category. In the same year 2005, he went on to work in 2 more movies, Dus and Bluffmaster. Both of these movies did moderately at the Box Office.
Abhishek Bachchan’s third Filmfare Award in the Best Supporting Actor category came his way due to his performance in the movie Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna that was released in the year 2006. The movie dealt with the topic of marital infidelity and performed moderately at the Box Office. His role was that of a man, whose wife, played by Rani Mukerji, is not very happy with the marriage. This leads to an affair between Rani and Shah Rukh Khan. The latter is also unhappy with his marriage with Preity Zinta.
His first collaboration with his wife Aishwarya Rai was in the movie Umrao Jaan, which was basically a remake of the 1981 movie of the same name that featured Farooq Sheikh and Rekha. However, the movie failed to make any impact at the Box Office. His next venture was Dhoom 2, which was the sequence to the original Dhoom. Both Abhishek and Uday are seen playing their original roles from the previous movie. They were joined by Aishwarya Rai and Hrithik Roshan. Dhoom 2 went on to become the highest grossing movie for the year 2006. However, movie critics were of the opinion that Abhishek was turned into a mere supporting actor to Hrithik.
The year 2007 saw the release of Guru made by Mani Ratnam. It featured Abhishek and Aishwarya Rai and it was also their first professional collaboration post marriage. Guru was somewhat based on the life of Dhirubhai Ambani. Other reputed actors in the movie include Mithun Chakraborty, R. Madhavan, Arya Babbar, and Vidya Balan. Guru did extremely well at the Box Office. Abhishek went on to work alongside Preity Zinta, Lara Dutta, and Bobby Deol in his next venture Jhoom Barabar Jhoom that got released in the year 2007. The movie performed on an average basis in the country and did moderately well worldwide. That same year, he did a small role in the movie Laaga Chunari Mein Daag, which was a female centric movie.
He reprised his role along with his father Amitabh in his forthcoming movie Sarkar Raj. The movie was made by Ram Gopal Varma and got released in the year 2008. Aishwarya was cast in the movie as a new addition. Sarkar Raj did quite well at the Box Office and it also earned his a nomination in the Best Supporting Actor category in the Filmfare Awards. Drone, which was his next movie, failed miserably both commercially and critically.
Abhishek’s next movie, Dostana, was released in the year 2008 and was basically a romantic comedy between 2 men played by Abhishek and Joh Abraham. They pretend to be gay so that they are allowed to stay with a girl played by Priyanka Chopra. However, the situations make both of them fall in love with the girl. The movie was a success at the Box Office and it also earned his a nomination for the Filmfare Awards for Best Actor. The next year, 2009, saw both Delhi-6 and Paa getting released. The former failed to impress the audiences. However, the latter did make up for the loss that year. Paa basically dealt with the life of a boy, played by Amitabh Bachchan, who suffers from progeria. His parents were Vidya Balan and Abhishek Bachchan. He was the producer of the movie and he also won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi.
Abhishek had to face a challenging phase in his acting career from the year 2010 to 2012. His movies, Raavan, Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey, Game, and Players received poor reviews from both critics and audiences. However, he got back on track with his lead role in the movie Bol Bachchan made by Rohit Shetty. The movie got released in the year 2012 and was one of the major blockbusters despite the fact that it received mixed reviews from movie critics. He also won several awards for his role in the movie that included IIFA and Screen awards.
The year 2013 saw the release of Dhoom 3, which featured Abhishek, Uday Chopra, Aamir Khan, and Katrina Kaif. This was the third installment of the original Dhoom movie and it went on to become a major blockbuster that year. There were many reviews from critics that said that his role was overshadowed by Aamir. He went on to work on several other movies such as Happy New Year, All Is Well, Housefull 3, and Manmarziyaan.
Ventures in the World of Sports
Abhishek Bachchan bought the entire kabaddi team, Jaipur Pink Panthers, and is also the co-owner of the Indian Super League football team Chennaiyin FC. In the year 2014, his team, Jaipur Pink Panthers, won the first Pro Kabaddi League championship, whereas, Chennaiyin FC won their ISL championships in the years 2015 and 2018.
Abhishek Bachchan Personal Life
During the month of October, 2002, at Amitabh Bachchan’s 60th birth anniversary, Karishma Kapoor and Abhishek announced their engagement. However, the engagement was called off in the month of January, 2003. He later fell in love with Aishwarya Rai during the shooting of the movie Dhoom 2, in which both of them worked together. The couple announced their engagement on the 14th of January, 2007 and this was also later confirmed by Amitabh Bachchan. They got married on the 20th of April, 2007 in a private ceremony that took place at the Bachchan residence. Both Aishwarya and Abhishek appeared at The Oprah Winfrey Show in the month of September, 2009. Aishwarya gave birth to their daughter on the 16th of November, 2011.
Apart from working in movies, Abhishek Bachchan has also been the brand ambassador for several products such as LG Home Appliances, Videocon DTH, American Express credit cards, Ford Fiesta, Motorola mobiles, and Idea mobiles. In the year 2005, Abhishek happened to be a part of a stage show that was organized by the Tamil director Mani Ratnam. The name of the stage show was Netru, Indru, Naalai, which was basically an event aimed at raising funds for The Banyan that was a voluntary organization which rehabilitates homeless women suffering from mental illness in the city of Chennai. In the year 2008, Abhishek also starred with Madhuri Dixit, Aishwarya Bachchan, Amitabh Bachchan, Preity Zinta, and Riteish Deshmukh in the stage production named as the Unforgettable World Tour. The first leg of the tour covered major countries such as Canada, USA, London, and Trinidad. Abhishek is also in the various administrative and functional operations of his father’s company that was originally named as ABCL and later renamed as AB Corp. Ltd. this company, along with Wizcraft International Entertainment Pvt. Ltd. developed the Unforgettable World Tour.
