New Delhi, Jul 25: Waheeda Rehman reminisces the past. She signed for the Dev Anand film "Guide" when her contemporaries were signing romantic movies or family drama. In the 60s it was a tough decision to be a part of such a film since "Guide" highlighted the negative colors of her onscreen character. The industy was not open to such kind of roles being played by women. Though Waheeda’s character Rosie earned huge appreciation it was more like a rebellion. When she signed the film, her co-workers argued that she is taking a wrong decision, which might put a full stop permanently to her filmi career. Those days, actresses were seen in submissive roles.
The legendary actress being open-minded still agreed to act in the film. The character was a sort of inspiration for Waheeda. Ultimately the movie was a hit and the audience loved her role.
Waheeda started off her career in Bollywood with the film "C.I.D" in 1956 which was a thriller by Guru Dutt featuring Dev Saab. Though Waheeda is from a non-filmi background, she did not face hurdles in becoming one of the top actresses of her time. She was never overshadowed by the actors, though the industry was a male-dominated one.
