London, Aug 12: Children's television series 'Sesame Street' has finally spoken up about their puppets Bert and Ernie's relationship, dismissing rumours of the two being gay.
The producers of the show made it clear recently that Bert and Ernie are best friends, but that does not mean they are gay.
There was a growing online campaign and petition to have the two puppets get married as a way to beat homophobia and encourage tolerance of gay people.
Sesame Workshop, the educational workship behind the 40-year-old educational show, claimed that as puppets, Bert and Ernie do not have a sexual orientation.
"Bert and Ernie are best friends. They were created to teach preschoolers that people could be good friends with those who are very different from them," the Telegraph quoted Sesame Workshop as saying.
"Even though they are identified as male characters and possess many human traits and characteristics, they remain puppets, and do not have a sexual orientation," they posted on its official Facebook page. (ANI)
