A court here has summoned director Ashutosh Gowarikar for allegedly distorting historical facts in the filming of his period drama "Akbar-Jodha".

Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Dinesh Gupta yesterday issued notices to Ashutosh Gowarikar Productions on a writ petition that alleged he had tampered with history and hurt the sentiments of the Rajput community.

Gowarikar has been asked to present himself before the court on December 6.

Jaipur-based Rajput Sabha President Narendra Singh Rajawat moved the court, accusing Gowarikar of distorting historical facts in his film.

Rajawat also submitted statements of historians in Rajasthan to suggest Ark Bai, and not Jodha, was married to Akbar while Jodha, the daughter of Raja Udai Singh, was married to Akbar's son Jahangir.

Gowarikar had earlier said he was not distorting history and claimed to have shown the film's script to Jaipur's royal family and consulted many historians.

The Hrithik Roshan-Aishwarya Rai film first ran into trouble after activists alleged cruelty to animals during its making. Recently, another Rajput group, Sri Karni Sena, threatened to stall its filming, saying Gowarikar was portraying a wrong image of the community.
